Divorce in the Black was released to streaming via Amazon Prime on July 11, 2024. It is safe to say this movie did not meet the mark. It was a loss of 2 hours and 23 minutes. Luckily, not a loss of cash paid to see the movie.
In a nutshell the movie is about a young woman acknowledging, accepting and moving away from her abusive marriage. Eva is a businesswoman, educated and seemingly strong who at the beginning the movie appeared to love and be committed to her husband. By the end of the movie, she is responsible for his death. Unfortunately, the story line failed to develop characters or provide sufficient background to allow for understanding or empathy for characters or their actions.
Tyler Perry's Divorce in the Black opening scene was mouth gaping. We start with a funeral where the pastor takes aim at the family of the deceased. On some level insinuating the deceased brother was in hell and his brothers would join him if they failed to change their ways. The family snatched the deceased brother's body from the casket and haul him home to bury him. WOW! This is an attention getting scene. The remaining scenes failed to live up to or adequately explain the characters or their actions.
Too often I felt like I joined a conversation more than half over. We find a couple struggling to maintain their relationship in Ava and Dallas. There was so much lost history it was challenging to see beyond their current actions. This loss of history created a divide that made it difficult to emotionally connect with any of the characters. We get glimpses of abuses mostly revealed in a letter from Eva's best friend to help her commit to leaving Dallas. Dallas irrational erratic behavior reinforces Eva's need to leave.
Although I'm a a fair-weather fan of Tyler Perry, Divorce in the Black left me wanting to know more about the characters, their lives prior to the crazy disruptive opening scene. I will continue to support the franchise...for now
